单词 medick
释义

medickn.

Brit. /ˈmɛdɪk/, U.S. /ˈmɛdɪk/
Forms: late Middle English medice, late Middle English 1600s medike, 1500s–1600s medicke, 1500s–1700s 1900s– medic, 1500s– medick, 1700s meddick.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin mēdica.
Etymology: < classical Latin mēdica < Hellenistic Greek μηδίκη , use as noun (short for Μηδικὴ πόα , lit. ‘Median grass’, as the plant was imported from Media) of ancient Greek Μηδικὴ , feminine of Μηδικός < Μηδία Media (see Median n.1 and adj.1) + -ικός (see -ic suffix). Compare Italian medica (c1340), Middle French medique (1555). Compare slightly earlier medica n., and also melic n.1 (but see etymological note at that entry). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mī·dik) /ˈmiːdɪk/, as do the Imperial Dict. (1882), the Cent. Dict. (1890), and the Encyclopædic Dict. (1895). Editions of Webster from the mid 19th cent. consistently give the current pronunciation.
Any of various Eurasian and North African plants, chiefly yellow-flowered, constituting the genus Medicago (family Fabaceae ( Leguminosae)), which resemble clovers but have spirally coiled, sometimes spiny, seed pods; spec. one of those grown for fodder or green manure. Frequently with distinguishing word. Formerly more fully medick clover, medick trefoil.black, purple, tree medick, etc.: see the first element.
