Etymology: Origin uncertain; compare -al suffix². With the ending -nal compare trional n., veronal n. Originally a brand name.C. Battisti and G. Alessio Diz. etimol. italiano (1975) suggest a possible derivation from the name of Karl Oskar Medin (1847–1927), Swedish physician. The substance was first synthesized in 1903 by the German chemist and Nobel Prize winner Emil Fischer (1852–1919).

Pharmacology.

A barbiturate drug, C₈H₁₁N₂NaO₃, with properties and uses similar to those of barbitone, of which it is the sodium salt. Also called barbitone sodium.
