Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish medio.
Etymology: < American Spanish medio, lit. ‘half’ (attested in Spanish in this specific sense from 1476 in the phrase medio real ) < classical Latin medius (see medium adj.).
Now historical.
A small silver coin of Mexico (and Cuba), minted from 1535 until 1869, though still current until c1905, worth half a real fuerte or 6¼ centavos. Also more fully medio real.
