单词 meditullium
释义

meditulliumn.

Forms: 1600s meditallium (probably transmission error), 1600s–1800s meditullium.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin meditullium.
Etymology: < classical Latin meditullium interior (of a country), mid-point, middle, probably < medius (see medium adj.) + *-tollium , cognate with classical Latin tellus Tellus n.The change in vowel < -e- in tellus is not easily explained. The assumption that an unattested *-tollium intervened between tellus and -tullium is based largely on the parallellism with the vowel change of classical Latin terra terra n. in the compound extorris. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (meditɒ·liɒ̆m) /mɛdɪˈtʌlɪəm/.
