Etymology: < early Scandinavian (compare Old Icelandic meldr grist, flour (Icelandic meldur ), Old Swedish mälder (Swedish mäld ), Norwegian melder , meld ) < an extended form of the Germanic base of meal n.1 Compare (with a different ablaut grade) Middle Dutch malder, molder, mouder, Old Saxon maldar (Middle Low German mōlder, malder), Old High German maltar (Middle High German malder, malter) measure of corn.
