The doctrine that the world, or society, may be improved and suffering alleviated through rightly directed human effort; a policy embodying this doctrine.Frequently contrasted with optimism or pessimism, and expressing the belief that the world is neither the best nor the worst of all possible worlds (cf. optimism n. 1, pessimism n. 3), but may be improved. As used by some writers, the term implies further the belief that society has on the whole a prevailing tendency towards improvement.
