Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin melissa.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin melissa (from a1250 in British sources; in scientific Latin adopted by J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 193) < ancient Greek (non-Attic) μέλισσα bee (compare ancient Greek (Attic) μέλιττα : see mell n.2), so called in allusion to its attractiveness to bees, probably after Hellenistic Greek μελισσόϕυλλον in the same sense ( > classical Latin melissophyllum : see melliphill n.). Compare Old French melise (c1256), melisse (13th cent.), mellissa (1314), Middle French melice (1353), mellisse (c1500), Middle French, French mélisse (c1500), German Melisse (c1500).
A plant of the genus Melissa (family Lamiaceae ( Labiatae)), esp. lemon balm, M. officinalis, chiefly as used medicinally; an extract of this herb. Also (in form Melissa): the genus itself.Valid publication of the genus name: Linnaeus Species Plantarum (1753) II. 592.
