单词 melitagrous
释义

melitagrousadj.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin melitagra , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin melitagra a form of impetigo (see quot. 1808; < ancient Greek μελιτ- honey (see mell n.2) + ἄγρα a catching, after classical Latin podagra podagra n.) + -ous suffix. Compare French mélitagreux (1836), mélitagre (1830).J. B. F. Rivière Essai sur la mélitagre (1830) asserts that the word was coined by Galen, but this has proved untraceable. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (melitēi·grəs) /mɛlɪˈteɪɡrəs/.
