Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin melius inquirendum.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin melius inquirendum, short for ad melius inquirendum , lit. ‘towards a better inquiry’ < classical Latin ad towards + melius better (adverb corresponding to melior : see meliorate v.) + inquīrendum , gerund of inquīrere to inquire (see inquire v.).
Law. Now historical.
A writ allowing a second inquiry into a case where partiality is suspected, esp. in land law.The melius inquirendum was ratified in the Act 2 & 3 of Edward II (see quot. 1549), but existed in Common Law since at least the mid 15th cent. (see quot. 1970). Quot. 1678 shows a transferred use.
