Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Melchita.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Melchita (16th cent.) < Byzantine Greek Μελχίτης (c1100) < Syriac malkāyā royalist (i.e. adherent of the party of the Byzantine emperor) < malkā king, cognate with Arabic malik (see malik n.); compare -ite suffix1. Compare French melchite (1666), melkite (1690).

1. Christian Church. Originally: an Eastern Christian adhering to the Orthodox faith as defined by the councils of Ephesus ( a.d. 431) and Chalcedon ( a.d. 451) and as accepted by the Byzantine emperor. Now: an Orthodox or Uniate Christian using the Byzantine rite and belonging to the patriarchate of Antioch, Jerusalem, or Alexandria.
