Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Memnonius , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Memnonius ( < ancient Greek Μεμνόνιος (in Hellenistic Greek also Μεμνόνειος ) < Μεμνον- , Μέμνων Memnon (probably < the base of μένειν to remain: see remain v.) + -ιος, -ειος, suffix forming adjectives) + -an suffix.With Memnonian Palace (see quot. 1667 at sense 1) compare ancient Greek τὰ βασιλήϊα τὰ Μεμνόνια (Herodotus).
Chiefly poetic.
1. Of or relating to Memnon, a mythical king of the Ethiopians, the son of Aurora and Tithonus, and associated in antiquity with various eastern lands; (in extended use) eastern, Persian. Now rare. Perhaps Obsolete.
