Origin: Perhaps from a proper name.
Etymology: Perhaps the name of the Meru for themselves or perhaps an ethnonym in the language of a neighbouring people.The following quot. has formerly (in O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) at cited word) been taken as a reference to this people in a nonstandard spelling, but refers instead to the Mwera of Tanzania (see Mwera n.):1883 R. N. Cust Sketch Mod. Langs. Afr. II. xii. 342 A little to the North of the Ma-Konde dwell the Wa-Mwera, not a large tribe, but..they have a separate language.
