Etymology: < meso- comb. form + amoeboid adj. (see quot. 1879 at sense A.). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mesămī·boid) /mɛsəˈmiːbɔɪd/.
Biology. Now historical.

C. S. Minot's name for: a type of embryonic wandering cell of mesodermal origin (perhaps a primitive haematopoietic stem cell). Obsolete.

1879 C. S. Minot in Proc. Boston Soc. Nat. Hist. 20 207 For mesodermic cells, not mechanically united to other cells, but capable of independent locomotion by amoeboid movements, I propose the collective name of mesamoeboids.
1891 New Sydenham Soc. Lexicon Mesamœboids, Minot's term for the wandering, amoeba-like or stellate cells, which are budded off during the blastula stage..and go to form the mesoblast.
