Etymology: < meso- comb. form + encephalon n. Compare earlier mesocephale n., mesencephal n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mesense·fălǫn) /mɛsɛnˈsɛfəlɒn/.
Anatomy and Zoology.
The middle part of the developing brain; (now) spec. the midbrain; the part of the brainstem derived from the middle cerebral vesicle of the embryo, consisting of the crura cerebri, tegmenta, tectum, and cerebral aqueduct.
