Etymology: < post-classical Latin mesenterium (1363 in Chauliac), mesenterion (probably 6th cent.; 14th cent. in a British source) and its etymon ancient Greek μεσεντέριον, use as noun (short for μεσεντέριον δέρμα : see derma n.) of neuter singular of μεσεντέριος < μέσος meso- comb. form + ἔντερον enteron n. + -ιος , suffix forming adjectives. Compare earlier mesentery n.
