Etymology: < meteorology n. + -ist suffix, perhaps after ancient Greek μετεωρολόγος person who studies celestial and meteorological phenomena. Compare earlier meteorologician n., meteorologian n.The reduced form meterologist probably reflects the corresponding pronunciation. This pronunciation is given in Webster (1961 onwards). Compare similar forms s.v. meteorological adj., meteorology n.
