Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek μετεωρολογία.
Etymology: < ancient Greek μετεωρολογία the study of celestial and meteorological phenomena < μετεωρο- meteoro- comb. form + -λογία -logy comb. form. Compare Middle French meteorologie (1548), Italian meteorologia (1542), post-classical Latin meteorologia (1512). Compare earlier meteorologer n.The reduced form meterology probably reflects the corresponding pronunciation (compare similar forms s.v. meteorological adj., meteorologist n.).
