Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin metallarius ; metal n., -ar suffix2, -er suffix1.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin metallarius (see metallary n.) or independently < metal n. + -ar suffix2; in quot. 1658 perhaps independently < metal n. + -er suffix1.
Scottish. Obsolete.
A person who works in metal.
