Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin metallarius ; metal n., -ary suffix1.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin metallarius miner (5th cent., apparently rare), or independently < metal n. + -ary suffix1. Compare Old Occitan metalier (15th cent.), Middle French metallaire (1542 in sense ‘worker in metals’; 1554 in sense ‘miner’), French metaillier (1600), metallier (Cotgrave, 1611), Italian metalliere (17th cent.; earlier in form metallaro (Florio, 1598)). Compare also metallar n.1
Obsolete.
A miner or worker in metals; an expert in the nature and kinds of metals. Cf. metallar n.1
