Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin memoria, technica, technicus.
Etymology: < classical Latin memoria memory n. + technica, feminine singular of technicus technical (see technic adj.). Coined by Richard Grey (see quot. 1730 and note below).
A method of assisting the memory by artificial contrivances; a system of mnemonics; a mnemonic aid or device.In early use sometimes spec. with reference to the system devised by Richard Grey (see quot. 1730), involving the memorizing of rhythmical sequences of words formed by prefixing the initial syllable or syllables of a word or name to letters representing the digits of an associated date, etc.
