memorialadj.n.

Brit. /mᵻˈmɔːrɪəl/, U.S. /məˈmɔriəl/
Forms: Middle English–1500s memoriale, Middle English–1500s memorialle, Middle English–1500s memoryal, Middle English–1500s memoryall, Middle English– memorial, 1500s memoreall, 1500s–1700s memoriall, 1600s memoriell (rare); Scottish pre-1700 memoreall, pre-1700 memorial, pre-1700 memoriale, pre-1700 memoriall, pre-1700 memorieall, pre-1700 memorriall, pre-1700 memoryal, pre-1700 memoryall, pre-1700 memoryalle.
Origin: Perhaps of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Perhaps partly a borrowing from French. Etymons: Latin memoriālis, memoriale; French memorial.
Etymology: < classical Latin memoriālis, adjective ( < memoria memory n. + -ālis -al suffix1) and memoriale, use as noun of the neuter singular of the adjective (late 2nd or early 3rd cent. in plural in the sense ‘records’; in the Vulgate in senses B. 1, B. 2a, and B. 4); in some senses perhaps via Middle French memorial (adjective) commemorative, remembered, relating to memory (16th cent.; 13th cent. in Old French in isolated use in sense ‘mindful’), Middle French memorial (French mémorial) (noun) reminder, something which recalls something to mind, legal document (13th cent. in Old French; in Anglo-Norman apparently only in sense ‘reminder’), memorandum book (1549). Compare also Italian memoriale (adjective) memorable, (noun) historical record, notebook (14th cent.), Spanish memorial (noun) memorandum book (15th cent.), Portuguese memorial (adjective) memorable, (noun) memorandum book, petition (16th cent.).
