Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French mendiant (late 12th cent. in Old French in the general senses ‘beggar, beggarly’, a1280 in the sense ‘mendicant friar’, c1350 as adjective referring to mendicant orders), uses as noun and adjective of the present participle of mendier to beg (c1100 in Old French as mendeier ) < classical Latin mendīcāre (see mendicant n. and adj.).
