Etymology: < classical Latin mendīcātiōn-, mendīcātiō begging (one isolated attestation in Seneca; from 12th cent. in British sources) < mendīcāt- , past participial stem of mendīcāre to beg (see mendicant n. and adj.) + -iō -ion suffix1. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mendikēi·ʃən) /mɛndɪˈkeɪʃən/.
