Origin: A borrowing from Afrikaans. Etymon: Afrikaans meneer.
Etymology: < Afrikaans meneer (South African Dutch meneer ) < Dutch mijnheer mynheer n.
South African.
1. As a title of, or polite or respectful form of address to, an Afrikaans man: mister (Mr), sir. Also substituted by a speaker for the name of an Afrikaans man, or for the pronoun which would stand for this name. Cf. baas n.Also used more generally in representations of Afrikaans speech.
