Forms: 1500s metriste, 1800s– metrist, 1900s– meterist; also Scottish pre-1700 metrost.
Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: Latin metrista ; metre n.1, -ist suffix.
Etymology: Either < post-classical Latin metrista (13th cent.; from 15th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin metrum metre n.1 + -ista -ist suffix, or (especially in later instances) independently < metre n.1 + -ist suffix.
(a) A person who writes (esp. skilfully) in metre; spec. a poet who is particularly adept in the handling of metre. (b) More generally: a metrical writer.
