单词 metrotome
释义

metrotomen.

Brit. /ˈmiːtrətəʊm/, U.S. /ˈmitrəˌtoʊm/
Forms: 1800s metratome (irregular), 1800s– metrotome.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: metro- comb. form3, -tome comb. form.
Etymology: < metro- comb. form3 + -tome comb. form, perhaps after French métrotome (1840).Although N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (me·trŏtōum) /ˈmɛtrətəʊm/, this is almost certainly a misprint for (mī·trŏtōum) /ˈmiːtrətəʊm/.
Surgery. Now historical.
A cutting instrument used in uterine surgery, esp. to incise the cervix; a hysterotome.
