Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: meso- comb. form, hypogastrium n., epigastrium n.
Etymology: < meso- comb. form + -gastrium (in hypogastrium n., epigastrium n.). Compare post-classical Latin mesogastrium (1657 or earlier). Compare earlier mesogaster n. In sense 2 compare mesogastric adj.
1. Anatomy and Zoology. The mesentery of the stomach in the embryo; (originally also) any of various structures that develop from this, esp. the greater or lesser omentum (now rare).

2. Medicine and Surgery. The middle (umbilical or mesogastric) region of the abdomen, between the epigastrium and the hypogastrium. Cf. mesogastric adj. 3. Obsolete. rare.Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
