Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, logic n.
Etymology: < meta- prefix + logic n. In sense 1 perhaps after post-classical Latin Metalogicon (also in form Metalogicus (a1595 or earlier)), the title of a treatise on logic by John of Salisbury (d. 1180), written c1159. With sense 2 compare German Metalogik (1934 or earlier, probably after Polish metalogika ). Compare French métalogique (1910 as noun in sense 1). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (metălǫ·dʒik) /mɛtəˈlɒdʒɪk/.
Philosophy.
1. The study of questions which lie beyond the scope of logic, or which deal with the nature of logic. Cf. metalogical adj. 1. Now rare.
