Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: meta- prefix, -logue comb. form.
Etymology: < meta- prefix (see below) + -logue comb. form.In sense 1 after epilogue n. and prologue n.; apparently first used by W. H. Auden and C. Kallman (see quot. 1956 at sense 1, and compare meta- prefix 5). In sense 2, after dialogue n.; coined by G. Bateson (see quot. 1969 at sense 2, and compare meta- prefix 2).
