Any of three isomeric saturated cyclic liquid hydrocarbons, CH3·C6H10·CH(CH3)2 (methylisopropylcyclohexane); esp. the para-isomer, on whose carbon skeleton many terpenes are based. Also called terpane.

1907 A. J. Walker tr. A. F. Holleman Text-bk. Org. Chem. (ed. 2) 472 The saturated cyclic hydrocarbon hexahydrocymene, C10H20, is called menthane. It is not a natural product, but can be obtained by the interaction of cymene and hydrogen with nickel as as catalyzer.
1934 C. C. Steele Introd. Plant Biochem. xxi. 238 Menthol or ‘mint camphor’, C10H20O, is a secondary alcohol derived structurally from menthane.
