Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: methyl n., -thionic comb. form.

Etymology: < me- (in methyl n.) + -thionic comb. form, after German Methionsäure methionic acid (J. Redtenbacher 1840, in Ann. der Pharm. 33 356). Compare slightly earlier ethionic adj.The compound was described but not named by Liebig in 1835.

Chemistry. Now rare.
