Etymology: < the name of John Methuen (1650–1706), English ambassador at Lisbon, who concluded a commercial treaty of 1703 by which Portuguese wine could be imported into England under a preferential duty.A disyllabic pronunciation in 18th-cent. usage is probable in the light of the common spellings Methwen and Methwin in the 17th cent. (see the examples cited in C. W. Bardsley Dict. Eng. & Welsh Surnames (1901) at Methven, the first of which is John Methuen's grandfather) and in documentation relating to John Methuen (in which his name is spelt Methwyn).
