单词 methuen
释义

Methuenn.

Brit. /ˈmɛθjʊᵻn/, U.S. /ˈmɛθ(j)ʊən/
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Methuen.
Etymology: < the name of John Methuen (1650–1706), English ambassador at Lisbon, who concluded a commercial treaty of 1703 by which Portuguese wine could be imported into England under a preferential duty.A disyllabic pronunciation in 18th-cent. usage is probable in the light of the common spellings Methwen and Methwin in the 17th cent. (see the examples cited in C. W. Bardsley Dict. Eng. & Welsh Surnames (1901) at Methven, the first of which is John Methuen's grandfather) and in documentation relating to John Methuen (in which his name is spelt Methwyn). Earlier forms are also chiefly disyllabic (see P. H. Reaney & R. M. Wilson Dict. Brit. Surnames (1991) 307/2).
humorous. Now rare.
Portuguese wine (originally: spec. that imported to England under the terms of the treaty).
