单词 mentition
释义

mentitionn.

Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mentītiōn-, mentītiō.
Etymology: < classical Latin mentītiōn-, mentītiō lying, falsehood (one isolated attestation in the Rhetorica ad Herennium: see note) < mentīt- , past participial stem of mentīrī to lie (see mentery n.) + -iō -ion suffix1.The identification of classical Latin mentītiō is based on a reading menticiones found in only one of four manuscripts of the Rhetorica ad Herennium; the other three, including the earliest (from the 10th–11th cent.), have mentione or mentiones. The word mentitio does not appear to be attested in post-classical Latin.
Obsolete. rare. Apparently only attested in dictionaries or glossaries.
The action of telling lies.
