单词 menyanthin
释义

menyanthinn.

Brit. /mɛnɪˈanθɪn/, U.S. /mɛnɪˈænθ(ə)n/
Forms: 1800s menyanthine, 1800s– menyanthin.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Menyanthes , -in suffix1.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Menyanthes, the name of the genus of plants including the buckbean (J. Pitton de Tournefort Inst. Rei Herbariæ (1700) I. 117; see below) + -in suffix1. Compare French ményanthine (1842).Post-classical Latin menyanthes is condemned as erroneous in a 1557 edition of a Latin translation of Nicander; it is < Hellenistic Greek μινυανθές , the name of a different trifoliate plant, the pitch trefoil, Psoralea bituminosa (use as noun of μινυανθής blooming a short time < ancient Greek μινυ- , base of μινύθειν to diminish (see minor adj.) + ἄνθος flower: see anthos n.), with men- representing μιν-, perhaps as a result of confusion with Hellenistic Greek μηνάνθος dwarf water lily, Limnanthemum nymphoides. Compare French menianthes (1615).
Chemistry.
A bitter glycoside, C33H50O14, contained in the leaves of the buckbean, Menyanthes trifoliata.
