Etymology: Shortened < Mercedes (now Mercedes–Benz), a proprietary name for a range of vehicles produced by the Daimler motor company of Germany (now a part of Daimler–Benz) < Mercedes, the name of the daughter of Emil Jellinek (1853–1918), a diplomat and major investor in the original Daimler company.
