Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item, or perhaps modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: mercantile adj., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < mercantile adj. + -ism suffix, perhaps after French mercantilisme (1811 in sense 1, 1809 in sense 2) or German Merkantilismus (1816 or earlier). Compare earlier mercantility n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mə̄·ɹkăntəiliz'm) /ˈmɜːkəntaɪlɪz(ə)m/.

Cf. laissez-faire n. Now historical.The principles and practices of mercantilism were common in Europe in the 16th to 18th centuries, but were criticized by economists such as Adam Smith (1723–90).
