Etymology: < mercantile adj. + -ist suffix, perhaps after French mercantiliste (1841 as noun, 1837 as adjective). Compare earlier mercantilism n., mercantility n. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mə̄·ɹkăntəilist) /ˈmɜːkəntaɪlɪst/.
