A precursor or intermediate in the production of an enzyme or other substance which is secreted by a cell.

1885 M. Foster in Encycl. Brit. XIX. 19/1 The specific material of a secretion, such as the trypsin of pancreatic juice, comes from the protoplasm of the cell, through a number of intermediate substances, or mesostates as they are called.
1900 Amer. Naturalist 34 547 The regularly arranged coarse granules..are not always present throughout the extent of the vacuolar wall... The presumption is thus a fair one that the bodies are mesostates.
1904 Proc. Royal Soc. 73 316 Secretin..appears to cause the pancreatic cells to turn out the whole of the mesostates which they have accumulated during rest in preparation for the act of secretion.
