Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Latin lexical item. Etymons: mesothelium n., -oma comb. form.
Etymology: < mesothelium n. + -oma comb. form, after scientific Latin mesothelioma and German Mesotheliom (P. G. Woolley 1903, in Arch. f. pathol. Anat. u. Physiol. 172 321). Compare earlier endothelioma n. Compare French mésothéliome (20th cent.).
Pathology.
A malignant tumour of mesothelial origin, associated esp. with exposure to asbestos. In early use also: †any of various tumours believed to be derived from embryonic mesoderm (obsolete).
