Largely superseded by later meson n.³The reference in quot. 1987 is to Hideki Yukawa (1907–81), Japanese physicist and Nobel Prize winner, who in 1935 proposed an exchange particle mediating the force between nucleons. The ‘mesotron’, discovered in 1936, had some of the properties of the predicted particle, but not all. The pi-meson or pion, discovered in 1947, fulfilled all the requirements of Yukawa's particle.
