Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: meso- comb. form, -trophic comb. form.
Etymology: < meso- comb. form + -trophic comb. form, after German mesotroph (first used in this sense by C. A. Weber 1908, in Bot. Jahrbücher f. Systematik, Pflanzengeschichte u. Pflanzengeographie 40 27). Compare eutrophic adj., and oligotrophic adj.
Ecology.
Esp. of a lake or wetland: moderately rich in dissolved nutrients. Cf. eutrophic adj., oligotrophic adj.
