Etymology: < meta- prefix + physiology n. Compare French métaphysiologie (1876).
Those aspects of individual somatic experience which lie beyond the scope of conventional physiology to describe; (spec. in G. H. Lewes' terminology) the treatment of life and the mind as distinct from and requiring different criteria for explanation from questions of physiology (now historical).
