A protein denatured by acid or alkaline hydrolysis that is soluble in acids or alkalis but insoluble in water.

1908 Jrnl. Biol. Chem. 4 p. l Metaproteins.—Products of the further action of acids and alkalies whereby the molecule is so far altered as to form products soluble in very weak acids and alkalies but insoluble in neutral fluids.
