Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: metasomatic adj., metasomatosis n., -ism suffix.
Etymology: < metasomat- (in metasomatic adj. or metasomatosis n.) + -ism suffix.Quot. 1933 attributes the word to C. F. Naumann (1797–1873), German geologist and naturalist, but he (in Lehrbuch der Mineral. (1828) i. 209) appears only to have used the terms Metasomatosis metasomatosis n. and metasomatische metasomatic adj.
Geology.
Change in the chemical composition of a mineral or rock, esp. by the dissolution of one mineral and deposition of another. Cf. replacement n. 1b.
