Origin: From a proper name, combined with an English element. Etymons: proper name Mercer , -ization suffix.
Etymology: < the name of John Mercer (1791–1866), English calico-printer and chemist, who discovered the process in 1844 + -ization suffix. Mercer patented the process in 1850, but N.E.D. (1906) notes s.v. mercerize that ‘the process was not made use of in the trade until c1895’.
Textiles.
The process of treating cotton yarn or fabric (often under tension) with a concentrated solution of sodium hydroxide or other base, in order to impart strength and lustre and to increase affinity for dyes.After immersion, the yarn is washed with water and acid.
