Etymology: < the name of John Mercer (see mercerization n.) + -ize suffix. Compare earlier mercerized adj., mercerization n., mercerizing n.French merceriser is attested from 1878 and given in French dictionaries as an English loanword; however, the use in French may arise by analogy with earlier mercerized, mercerization, or mercerizing.
Textiles.
transitive. To treat (cotton yarn or fabric) by the process of mercerization.
