Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mezza voce.
Etymology: < Italian mezza voce (second half of the 14th cent.; also a mezza voce ) < mezza , feminine of mezzo half (see mezzo adv.) + voce (see voice n.). Compare French mezza voce (1768). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (me·dzăˌvō·tʃe) /ˈmɛddza ˈvotʃe/.
