Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian mezzo.
Etymology: < Italian mezzo (adjective) middle, half (end of the 13th cent.; 1158 as mezo ) < classical Latin medius (see medium n.).Frequently used in combination with other musical directions (see below); it is uncertain whether these represent borrowings < Italian, or formations within English (or other languages). N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (me·dzo) /ˈmɛdzəʊ/.
Music.
Modifying a musical direction: half, moderately, fairly (see also the second element). Esp. in mezzo forte (also as n.), mezzo piano (also as n.), mezzo staccato.
