Etymology: < the name of Giuseppe Mezzofanti (1774–1849), Italian cardinal, who reputedly mastered over fifty languages. O.E.D. Suppl. (1976) gives the pronunciation as (medzofæ·nti) /mɛdzəʊˈfæntɪ/.
Obsolete.
A person of exceptional linguistic ability. Also figurative.
