Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French Mesvinien.
Etymology: < French Mesvinien (E. Delvaux 1886, in Bull. de la Soc. Anthrop. Bruxelles 4 185) < Mesvin , the name of a town in Belgium near Mons, where flint objects believed to be artefacts were found in 1867 + -ien -ian suffix.
Archaeology. Now historical.

Belonging to or characteristic of a culture postulated to exist in either the Eolithic or the Lower Palaeolithic age in Belgium and characterized by a lack of hand-axe tools. Cf. Acheulean adj., Chellean adj., Clactonian adj.Subsequent research determined that the finds did not indicate a distinctive local culture, and questioned their dating and typology (see, e.g., quot. 1986).
